Back at Schuyler’s apartment, Max splashed water on his face at the bathroom sink. The cold snapped some sense into him, even if Jack’s words still clanged around in his head.

Jack had stayed behind at the Warehouse while Max went back to Schuyler’s to gather his things. Now that Jack was safe, he’d decided the best place to be was at the Warehouse with the Paladins, so that meant Max would stay with him too. While the generosity of the Cervantes-Chase family was noble, Max couldn’t hide in their house forever. He wanted to be with Jack. Schuyler said he could take her family’s camping gear to make living at the Warehouse a little more comfortable and she got to work packing up a go-bag for Jack. Who knew how long they would need to stay in hiding?

The twins could never go home. The Force boys were considered worse than dead—exiled. Their existence would be erased.

At one time Max had had the entire world at his feet, and now he had nothing. Except Jack. At least, he reasoned, they had each other. And Jack still had power, which was something. Max would sooner die than let Aldrich get his hands on Jack.

The water dripped down the length of Max’s nose, and he watched it disappear down the drain.

Making more vampires? Really? Then again, was it out of the realm of possibility? With himself as Regent and Coven leader, Aldrich Duncan had pushed vampires beyond their limits. Would making more vampires truly be that impossible?

The very idea scared Max. Vampire power was strong enough to thin the veils between worlds temporarily, but the machine needed souls in order to work. If he was burning through the number of available ones, he’d run out before long. Aldrich needed more souls to keep going. And why was it taking him so long to break open the barriers between worlds with Azrael’s sword? Why hadn’t he used it yet? Had he not yet found a person who was pure of heart enough to wield it?

Another startling thought was troubling Max. Was this how Schuyler had been created? What if she’d been given blue blood to drink and that had turned her into a vampire? Max splashed some more water on his face. No, he sensed there was something else at play. Schuyler’s mother, Aurora, still intrigued him. Why did he have the feeling that he knew her somehow? The Superimposed memories had played with his brain and he was still sorting through the mess.

Max glared at himself in the bathroom mirror. Why did he have to be so useless?

The lights flickered and the bathroom momentarily fell into darkness. The ground shook slightly as if a truck had rumbled through the building, and Max braced himself against the counter. His heart thrummed in his ears, but the earthquake passed quickly. Max stood rigid, waiting for the aftershock. The city rarely experienced earthquakes, so he knew this wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It was Aldrich. He was using the machine again.
